Classic recipe for Devil's Food Cake using freshly grated raw beets.
Devil’s Food Cake (with raw beets)
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 3/4 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup cocoa
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 3 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3/4 cup melted butter, cool
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup raw beets, grated
Procedure
- Preheat oven to 350 degres F. Grease a 10" diameter cake pan with high sides.
- Sift flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder and soda, and salt. Add in buttermilk, eggs and vanilla and beat until blended. Mix in butter and sour cream, then stir in beets.
- Pour into prepared pan and bake for 60 minutes or until cake tests clean. Let cake rest in pan for 10 minutes before turning out onto cooling rack.
